Life is interesting, isn't it?

The friend post

My Friend Meng Yee sent me a very interesting email today which I agree...Like I always say "Show me your friends and I will show you your future"

The Outcome Of Your Life Is Completely Dependent Upon Whom You Call Friend.

"He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be
destroyed."

Proverbs 13:20 (NKJV)

There are essentially two kinds of people in our lives - those who seek comfort in companionship, and those have an insatiable passion to change.

Individuals who make us comfortable don't have the ability to spur us on.

  • They don't cause us to change.
  • They don't urge us to become better.
  • They are content with mediocrity, stuck in their comfort zone, and truly never break free.
On the other hand, there are those who are assigned to our lives to help us change.
  • They are usually the authorities God places over us.
  • They exist in various arenas of life, including our employers, parents, and pastor.
  • They are vital to our growth.

Although we may feel pressure from those assigned to our lives to help us change, we must stay connected to these people since this type of pressure is for our growth and development. It is a necessity for you to become what God desires. If we turn our backs on our authorities and become a companion of those who are disrespectful, the Word of God tells us we will suffer severe consequences. We must acknowledge the significance and importance of relationships! Those we call our "friends" determine the outcome of our lives. May your friends only be those who draw you closer to the will of God for your life, and may you do the same in their lives.

I hope that all of us have at least 2 people whom we can call friends in our lives =)

~Cheers~

All these while I had never had a pure breed dog as a pet. Reason why is because I had never settled for which type of breed is my favourite. First it was the Beagle, then the Golden Retriever. Now, its the Welsh Corgi.

They are real cuties when they are young

Real cute when they are adults too!!
(No! I won't abandon my Corgi when it outgrows its cuteness)

I tell you...this video really was the turning point for me...I fell in love with
the Corgi instantly...

The breed of Corgi which I would love to keep is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Some interesting facts on Corgis and why I love 'em : -

  • They are known to be loyal, friendly, playful, quick & quick witted.
  • They are known to be good friends of farmers because they are herding dogs
  • They have an intelligent & interested expression, foxy but not sly
  • Interestingly (this one I didn't know before) they belong to a breed known as the Pastoral Breed (or herding breed)
Read more about Corgis here

Gimmie a shoutout if you think that Corgis are cute too!!!

Went to watch Michael Jackson's This is it movie in the cinema today. Need I say more other than MJ still holds on to the throne unchallenged as the King of Pop check out the trailer here.

Personally I am not a huge MJ fan, but I can't help but to be blown away by him all the time when I watch his concerts. His vocals & dance moves are phenomenal. I am always amazed at how this guys oozes with talent.

I would say that this movie is a must see for everyone who wants to watch what an awesome performance the London Tour would have been.

Initially I was quite a skeptic thinking this movie is nothing but a money making gimmick. After watching it, I realized that it was more than that. It was for everyone who were involved, the dancers, the vocalists, the musicians, technical people, the production crew...

I enjoyed the movie, it was totally AWESOME!

My Fav - Man in the Mirror

Mizz Drey's rating : 5/5 (AWESOME!! MJ King of Pop!)

I AM Sooo.....Sorry!!

www.mizzdreyhere.blogspot.com is currently being plagued by some annoying images!
I'd get that fixed when I get home tonight...APOLOGIES to all my readers...

**Update 4/11/09** Its all fixed now... =) Will be doing a write up on what actually happened...

A newspaper ad screams “enjoy 0% interest with our 12 month installment plan”. Suddenly, to a young, fresh graduate, buying a RM3000 DSLR camera doesn’t seem like an impossible task anymore. Now, we are not just talking about the elite youngsters who are born with a silver spoon in their mouths, we are talking about common youngsters like you and I. Yes, all the luxuries that our parents had to save up for in the past, we can obtain instantly thanks to the credit card.

Its heartbreaking to see young people full of potential in life entwined in insurmountable amounts of credit card debt. They end up servicing their debts with their salaries month in and month out.

If we want to change the world, we need to be good stewards of our finances. If we can’t be good stewards of the little that we have now, how can God entrust us with more to bless the people around us?

With that in mind, I decided to have a little chat with Mr. Richard Tan to get some insight. Mr. Richard Tan is the Director of the HSG Global Ministries, who has a vast experience in the banking industry. Here, he shares not only his views on young people and credit cards; he also shares his personal testimony and experience on how he got out of credit card debt.

How long have you worked in the bank and what is the current position that you are holding?

I had worked in a bank for 35 years – starting from clerk all the way up to manager level

Do you know of many people who are caught in credit card debt?

Yes, we have plenty of people who can’t pay up their debts. What is worse is usually these people only pay 5% of the outstanding balance not knowing that the interest alone would eventually kill them financially.

Normally what is the age group of the people who are caught up in credit card debt?

At one point of time, many young people were caught up in credit card debt because credit card companies were just giving the cards out to young graduates. For instance, some graduates who are only earning RM1200 a month, have a credit card with a limit of RM5000. Many young people were using the credit card to buy thing that they cannot afford and not long after that, they realize that they are using their monthly income to pay off the debts month after month.

What goes through the mind of these people when they are purchasing items with their credit card which they normally will not be able to afford?

Most of they time, all they think that all they have to do is to pay only 5% of the outstanding not knowing the exuberant interest rates that they are being charged. Unless they have a lump sum of money coming in, for instance bonuses which can be used to pay off the outstanding limit, they will find themselves in debt perpetually.

Perpetually means…

In other words, every month they end up paying their debts. For instance, you only earn RM1000 a month and you have an outstanding bill of RM5000, how are you going to pay that off? You have to take care of the payments for rent, bills, food etc. If you pay your entire salary to pay off the debt, you’ll die of hunger that month. So, you end up only paying around 10% of the outstanding amount which in this case is RM500 which itself is not a small amount. On top of that, the interest rate is very high and it keeps accumulating, in the end you only service the interest and you end up paying much more than the amount you borrowed initially.

If you cannot afford to spend, don’t spend future money because you don’t know what is going to happen. What if you can’t get a job or lose your job? What is going to happen to the debt?

The best thing is to spend within your means.

Its easier said than done because I’ve went through that road before. Many times I had to pray and ask God to bail me out. God has already bailed me out. In my opinion, we should try not to use credit card to pay for items that we can pay for with cash.

What about purchasing goods by monthly installments with 0% interest?

It might sound attractive, but picture this : You bought a phone using the 0% installment plan which you only need to pay RM85 per month. What if an emergency happens that month and you do not have that extra cashflow to pay off the installment. You will go into default, and the next month you will need to pay for two months, and if you still can’t pay for it, the following month you will need to pay for three months. Pretty soon, you will realize that you are way over your head with debt. Why don’t you save RM85 per month and after 12 months you get the phone?

How about using the points which is given by the credit card company for our own advantage?

Well of course you can do that provided you pay off the outstanding amount by the end of the month so that you don’t get charged interest.

So at the end of the day, it just boils down to avoid being charged interest?

Yes, because the interest rate for credit cards is very high*. During the time when I was caught in the debt trap I had paid a hefty share of interest.

Is there any good one can get out of credit cards?

No doubt having a credit card on you is good especially if you are travelling overseas.

What are the other credit card traps that one should look out for?

Balance transfers. What happens is some people spend an X amount on a credit card A. When offered a balance transfer, they transfer you entire X balance onto credit card B. With no more outstanding balance on credit card A and the credit limit is free, they start to swipe with credit card A again soon when they find that credit card A has ran out of credit limit, they’ll transfer the entire balance to a third credit card C and the vicious cycle continues. Soon they realize that they have 5 credit cards with an outstanding debt of RM25k!

You did mention earlier that you had been in credit card debt before, how did you managed to get out of it?

I had to discipline myself from using the credit card unnecessarily. My wife used to say, if you don’t have money don’t buy. I also prayed very hard and had to rely on God during those times.

*Standard interest rates for Visa & Mastercard is 1.5% per month. This will vary depending on the bank of choice and might be reduced if one is proven a good paymaster.

Yesterday, I had a one-of-a-kind customer service experience.

Right after dinner around 8-ish, as we were heading to my friend's place to celebrate one of their birthdays, we walked past a shoe shop of a well-known brand. (*hint - this took place at SS2)

The birthday girl LL wanted to have a look at a certain range of shoes which is supposedly very comfy. I have come to a point where I'd PAY for comfortable shoes. Especially BEAUTIFUL & SEXY comfortable shoes. Well, no harm looking right?

The following scene took place (please pardon my Manglish below)

Friend A : Eh....why so auntie wan all the designs?
Friend B : But quite comfortable la when you wear it...
Dree : I don't mind getting myself a pair to wear in the office...maybe just leave it under the desk.
LL : This pair not bad wert (looks at price - RM49.90)...quite expensive for a pair of sandals though...

That wasn't exactly what we said, but yea...you can get the gist of our whole conversation...it was revolving around this. We were talking around 10 minutes at the same time picking different designs off the shelves and trying them on.

Oh yes...I forgot to mention, all of us were dressed down (3 out of 4 of us were dressed in shorts & home clothes). We were the only other customer in the entire shop (which wasn't really THAT BIG, only a normal shop lot size) apart from another Malay family whose son was trying out a pair of shoes.

Finally LL & I were quite keen to get a pair each and picked the design of our liking and took it over to the counter to ask for our sizes.

Something was just odd about the shop attendant....
The attendant didn't bulge from the counter to assist either the Malay family or us
(Nevermind....maybe he was the only one in the shop to take care of the cash register, therefore he had to stay put at his post....)

When we asked for our sizes, he didn't respond in a friendly way
(Maybe thats just how he is...some people are just not-so-friendly naturally...its alright, he is just doing his job)

Finally he got us our shoe sizes and took only ONE side each for both LL & mine.
(Who in the world tries only ONE side of the shoe before they actually buy the shoe? Perhaps this guy is a new worker who don't know how things work)

At that point of time, the Malay couple were already paying at the counter, LL assumed that he was busy collecting the money and attempted to take the other side of the shoe for the both of us when he stopped her from taking the other side of the shoe and grumpily took the shoes out from the boxes and placed them on the counter with a thud
(This is just too much!)

Nevertheless, we had gone through all this trouble and gone so far, might as well just try them on.
I looked at mine, it didn't really fit (perhaps one or half a size smaller) and to think that I need to go through all of THAT again, I decided then not to buy the shoes.

I first told LL that I won't be buying the shoes then took the shoes back to the counter and told him that I will not be buying the shoes, then I proceeded to leave the shop, expecting LL to follow closely behind.

He then grumbled something behind me. As LL walked back to the counter with the shoes in her hands (at this point she was ACTUALLY contemplating whether to buy the shoes or not as perhaps she wasn't as particular as I).

Shop Attendant (SA) : You leh? Also don't want ar???

LL was shocked at the attendant being so rude. Immediately made up her mind and said "No" and put the shoes on the counter and also proceeded to leave the shop.

As LL was walking out, she could hear him grumbling.

SA : You also dun want, both also dun want, some more make me take out the shoes....

Our usually mild mannered friend YS who had been looking at the sidelines seeing the whole bizarre scene unfold couldn't take it anymore

YS : Wa...Uncle...how can you do business, your attitude like that?
SA : **Grumble more**
LL : Uncle, I was actually thinking of buying the shoes, but I changed my mind because of your attitude!
SA : Don't buy don't buy lor..I don't want to sell also!!
LL : Wa...I go tell all my friends not to buy from you!!

The last part of the conversation took place when I was already on the way to my car, so...it was LL & YS who related the who conversation.

As much as we were frustrated with the SA, at least we didn't actually buy the shoes so...hey,nothing lost. At least we were much better off compared to this frustrated Macbook customer

I must say that this incident added a little bit of flavor to LL's birthday celebration after that. Surely, no birthday could be more special than this.... =)

Happy Birthday LL!!

I hate it when unscrupulous people ruin other people's holiday. I received an email from Grace a few days ago, and for some of us this might not the the first time we are reading up on stories as such, nevertheless, its always better to be safe than sorry.

Unfortunately, South East Asia, and even my homeland Malaysia is a haven for crooks waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting tourist.

So, watch out for the following scams (or supposedly scams). Its better to be safe than sorry.

Subject: Duped by credit card scam upon check in at Hotel

You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. When checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for all the charges for your room). You get to your room and settle in. Someone calls the front desk and asked for (example) Room 620 (which happens to be your room).

Your phone rings in your room. You answer and the person on the other end says the following, ' This is the front desk. When checking in, we came across a problem with your
charge card information. Please re-read me your credit card number and verify the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card. '

Not thinking anything you might give this person your information, since the call seems to come from the front desk. But actually, it is a scam of someone calling from outside the hotel/front desk. They ask for a
random room number. Then, ask you for credit card information and address information. Sounding so professional that you do think you are talking
to the front desk.

If you ever encounter this problem on your vacation, tell the caller that you will be down at the front desk to clear up any problems. Then, go to the front desk and ask if there was a problem. If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone called to scam you of your credit card information acting like a front desk employee.

If you feel that the tips are useful, please forward it to your
relatives, friends & colleague.

Bangkok International Airport

Folks, be warned and be really careful, check the items you bought and give back what does not belong to you even when the shop assistants claimed it's 'free'. I believe the duty free shop assistants would also get a share.......so, be very, very careful. Read below

My Dept. secretary informed on this. Her cousin was detained in Bangkok for stealing a box of cigarettes in a duty-free shop in Bangkok International Airport .

He had paid for chocolates and a carton of cigarettes. The cashier put a packet of smokes into his bag and he thought it was a free pack.

He was arrested for shop-lifting and the Thai Police extortion price was RM30,000 for his release. He spent two nights in jail and paid RM50 for an air-con cell,
200-300 baht for each visitor, and RM11,000 for his final release.

The Police shared the money in front of his eyes. On top of that, he was charged in court and fined RM2,000 by the magistrate and handcuffed and escorted to his plane.

His passport was stamped "Thief". While there, his relatives requested help from the Malaysian Embassy and was told that they are helpless, as Malaysians are victimised similarly daily and letters and phone-calls to the Thai Authorities are ignored.

He shared a cell with a Singaporean the 1st night who paid RM60,000 for his release.

The 2nd night was an Indian national who paid USD70,000.

Mind you this is not in a shag downtown
Bangkok but in a duty free shop in Bangkok 's Int'l Airport ..

Share this experience with all your friends!

Subject: Driving to JB (Johor Baru, Malaysia)

If you get RM10.00 in your car door handle, use tissue paper or cloth to remove it without opening it and if possible bag it. Drive away immediately.

Don't check the note until you are in the company of your friends or relatives. The note could either contain powdered drugs to knock you out or make you wonder if some guilty motorist compensating you for a knock or scratch on your car, while you are still wondering, the robber(s) will attack you as you check the car.

This had happened in Johor. Please circulate to your friends and warn them.
